SLICING MACHINE, BUN
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military specification MIL-S-43818.
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
1.1 Design and construction. The bun slicing machine shall consist of a feeding chute tilted at a 25 to 35 degree vertical angle with the machine base and a circular cutting blade rotated by an electric motor. The motor shall be at least 1/4 horsepower and shall be controlled by an on-off switch provided with a safety guard cover located on the body of the bun slicing machine accessible to the operator. The feeding chute shall have adjustments for bun width and height, and thickness and depth of cut. The feeding chute interior width shall be infinitely adjustable from a lower limit of no more than 1-1/4 inches to an upper limit of no less than 5 inches. The feeding chute interior height shall be infinitely adjustable from a lower limit of no-more than 1-3/4 inches to an upper limit of no less than 2-3/4 inches. The cutting blade height shall be infinitely adjustable from a lower limit of no more than 1/2 inch above the base of the chute to an upper limit of no less than 15/16 inch above the base of the chute. The bun slicing machine shall be a counter model with 4 non-skid feet, and shall have envelope dimensions no greater than 36 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 25 inches high. No tools or excessive force shall be required to make adjustments on the bun slicing machine, and during adjustment there shall be no binding or jamming of moving parts. The bun slicing machine shall be capable of slicing both soft and hard buns and rolls without jamming or stalling, and without tearing or crushing the buns or rolls. When the machine is switched on, the cutting blade shall rotate such that, within the chute, the cutting edge travels away from the bun inlet. The cutting teeth or serrations, as applicable, shall have their cutting edge facing the same direction as the blade travels.
