COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RACKS, FOOD SERVICE TRAY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIL-R-43493.
1. CLASSIFICATION
1.1 Classification. This commercial item description covers two types of racks as follows:
Type I- For plastic trays
Type II- For steel trays
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Material, design, and construction. The racks shall be fabricated from either 16 gauge, type 304 stainless steel or 14 gauge, high strength aluminum alloy. The outside dimensions shall not exceed 68-3/4 inches high, 48 inches wide and 27 inches deep. Type I and II racks shall have three of four tray sections to hold the trays. Each section shall consist of top and bottom shelves, which shall secure each individual tray in an upright position during transit and permit air circulation for drying. Support members for the shelves shall be welded and riveted to vertical support members across pieces shall be riveted through gussets to provide sufficient strength. The type I rack shall accommodate a minimum of 160 plastic trays measuring 10-3/4 inches, by 13-7/8 inches, by 1-1/8 inches. The type II rack shall accommodate a minimum of 160 stainless steel trays measuring 11-5/8 inches by 15-1/2 inches by 3/4 inches. Consideration shall be given to the use of dissimilar metals, where necessary, to minimize or eliminate corrosion.
2.2 Casters. The racks shall be equipped with four removable 5-inch diameter neoprene tread swivel casters having a minimum load rating of 200 pounds per caster. One caster shall be located below each corner upright. Both casters on either long side of the rack shall be equipped with brakes.
2.3 Standards compliance. Racks shall comply with the sanitation requirements of the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard No.2.
