2.8.1 Motor. The motor for the bread slicing machine shall be 1/2 h/p, 120 volt, 60 hertz, single phase power source, and totally enclosed. When 50 hertz operation is specified (see 5.2), the voltage and phase shall be specified by the contracting officer. The motor shall comply with National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA) Standard MG-1.
2.8.2 Motor switch. The bread-slicing machine shall have a readily accessible double-pole, single-throw switch provided for starting and stopping the motor. The switch shall be recessed into the body structure of the bread-slicing machine or shielded to prevent inadvertent activation.
2.8.3 Cord and attachment plug. The cord shall be type SO or SJO and measure at least 8 feet in length with a NEMA approved 3-prong grounding plug.
2.9 Lubrication. Bearings located on surfaces requiring lubrication in the product zone shall be smooth, readily accessible and nontoxic. Bearings requiring other than lubrication shall be sealed or self lubricated, located outside the product zone and their design and construction shall be such that lubricants cannot leak, drip or be forced into the product zone.
2.10 Tools. Each bread-slicing machine shall be provided with a knife removing tool.
2.11 Finish. Exterior surfaces and parts not specified shall be neatly finished with a durable enamel in accordance with standard commercial practice.
2.12 Data name plate (Government unique requirement (see 5.4)). The slicing machines shall be furnished with a data name plate in accordance with the applicable requirements of MIL-STD-130 except the requirements for: (a) Methods of applying, (b) Identification tags, (c) Information not required, and (d) Optional marking information shall not apply. The data name plate shall be made of minimum 20 gauge corrosion-resisting metal and attached to the slicing machine by rivets, screws, or by welding in such a manner as to meet the applicable sanitary requirements for this equipment. The plate shall contain the following information which shall be stamped, engraved, or applied by photosensitive means:
National Stock Number
Procurement Contract Number
Specification Data
Manufacturer’s Name, Address, and Telephone Number
Supplier’s Name, Address, and Telephone Number (List only if different from Manufacturer)
Manufacturer’s Model Number
Government Approved Manual Number (when specified see 5.2)
Each plate shall be placed so that is readily visible to the operator during normal operating use and so as to not adversely affect the life and utility of the slicing machine.
